How Occupy Birthed a Rhizome by Joan Donovan

While the Situationists distributed communiqués and shared ideas through graffiti, Occupy protests began with the writing on digital walls that led to encampments across the globe. This article looks at OWS as a rhizome, a nodal mass of roots that grows horizontally under the soil, such as a root of ginger. Breaking off one or more of a rhizome’s nodes doesn’t injure it; that’s how it reproduces.

New Federal Lawsuit Filed Against NYPD for Occupy Arrests – PCJF Challenges Unlawful Police Tactics, Sidewalk Arrests, Orange Netting Corral

The Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF) has filed a federal lawsuit on September 20th, 2012 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York challenging the New York Police Department’s use of sidewalk arrests in which persons are targeted for false arrest based on their association with or proximity to dissent and protest. The lawsuit is filed on behalf of individuals who were falsely arrested on September 24, 2011 in the first week of the Occupy Wall Street movement, including one plaintiff who was subject to Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna’s notorious pepper spray attack on peaceful demonstrators.

Volunteering in the Bronx

Fordham offers its students a variety of unique ways to get involved in the wider Bronx community, and I am going to blog about just one of them: something called service-learning classes. In a service-learning class, your coursework is paired with a certain amount of required service with an organization that relates to the topic of the class. I am a female mechanical engineering student. I’m so good…

I am a female mechanical engineering student. I’m so good at Calculus, Physics, and 3-D designs. Dean’s List student, even for classes as Calc 3 and Dynamics. I have no co-signer for loans, so I am only eligible for enough to cover books and tuition. It’s taken my 5 years to complete 6 semesters because I run up my credit cards to pay for gas and food, and I can’t go back until I pay the balance down some. My cards are currently completely maxed, and I fear that I am beginning to lose Calculus knowledge that I learned in 2005. My car is ready to break down at 130,000 miles, and my debt payments are $700 just for interest every month. I have been paying on and off between semesters and I still have $5000 to go before I even begin to pay the principal balance. I’m 25, live at home, and I bartend 50 hours a week. I want to design machines and energy systems that have a positive impact on our society, but I’m getting you HAMMERED and cleaning up after your party instead. I especially enjoy when people talk to me like an idiot because you got the wrong cheese on your burger. I know – I’m serving you dinner because I must be a stupid girl.

I am the 99%.
